CFOT: 3-Day Basic Fiber Optic Technician Course

This FOA approved Course is recognized by the US Department Of Labor

CFOT Certified Fiber Optic Technician Course

Overview

This 3-day fiber optics course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician. This program combines theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optics Technician) test that is sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association) and given and graded the final class day. This course also introduces the student to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home, LAN/WAN fiber networks, and further introduces the student to basic fusion and mechanical splicing. Hands-on session will include multimode ISP cable. Students will learn the basics on how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed ISP fiber cable to existing standards. This program explores the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities. Standards covered: Introduction to ANSI/EIA/TIA 568 Standards, NECA/FOA-301-2004, EIA/TIA 568-B.3, ANSI/TIA/EIA 607-A (Ground & Bonding), and NEC Article 770-50. Additional supplemental study will include both mechanical and fusion splicing techniques along with actual OTDR trace sessions.  Course fee includes all books study materials and 3-year membership to the FOA.

Outcomes of the CFOT Certification

FOA CFOT certification means the person with a CFOT has demonstrated extensive basic knowledge of fiber optics and demonstrated skills and abilities in processes used in the industry. These requirements are summarized as KSAs (knowledge, skills, abilities). KSAs for the CFOT certification can be found in Section 1 of your CFOT Student Manual.

  • Knowledge is tested in the FOA CFOT exam taken by all applicants at the end of class.
  • Skills can be demonstrated in hands-on lab exercises and verified by instructors giving an FOA-Approved course.
  • Abilities: Fiber optic techs need the ability to perform relevant tasks, evidenced by showing skills in hands-on tasks.

  • Installation of premises and outside plant fiber optic cable
  • Splicing and termination
  • Testing fiber optic components and cable plants
  • Hands-On Lab Exercises including hands-on splicing, termination and testing.

Benefits of FOA Certifications

Like any certification program, the benefits to the members who pass the certification tests are based on the recognition of achieving a level of competence in the fiber optics field. For the end user looking for competent fiber optic personnel, it is the knowledge that this person has demonstrated knowledge and ability in the field and, perhaps even has documented experience. For the vendor of fiber optic products, it offers a technically- qualified pool of employees as well as contractors to recommend to end user customers who need to find installers for their networks. Many companies require FOA certifications or even offer FOA certifications to their personnel through internal training classes.
